Update – Hurricane Debby
The torrential rain that was dropped by Hurricane Debby caused significant flooding along the Edisto River in South Carolina’s lowcountry. In response, SC Baptist Disaster Relief established two response sites from which mud-out units could work in the affected areas.
One site was established at Memorial Baptist Church in St. George, SC and is being managed by SCBDR. See the list of participating units below.
A second site was established in Walterboro, at Bedon Baptist Church. That site was managed by Alabama Disaster Relief. An SC shower/laundry unit from Saluda Assoc/ Shady Grove Baptist Church supported this site. Unfortunately, several cases of COVID two weeks after opening caused Alabama DR to shut down the site to prevent further spread. Recovery efforts will continue out of the St. George site.
As they mud-out houses, DR volunteers talk with the residents, listening to their flood experiences and sharing the hope of Christ. One homeowner choked up and said, “I told my wife we were on our own to try to rebuild and then these men in yellow shirts showed up. God is the only one who could have sent them all the way out here.”
Mud-out units that have served to date are those from:
- Edgefield Association
- Beaverdam Assoc/ Utica Baptist Church
- Brookwood Church, Simpsonville
- Greenville Association
- Laurens Association
- Charleston Assoc/ Charleston Baptist Church
Chainsaw work has been done by these units:
- Midlands
- Barnwell-Bamberg Association
- Waccamaw Assoc/ North Conway Baptist Church

- Lexington Association Feeding team
- Screven Association Feeding team
