ALERT – Hurricane Helene

As we watch the latest hurricane make its way toward the Southeastern states, all SCBaptist Disaster Relief units are placed on ALERT to respond. Several states will be impacted by the storm, including South Carolina. Our units will be needed, it’s just a matter of whether it will be here in SC or in another state.

To prepare for potential effects on SC from Hurricane Helene, Governor McMaster has declared a state of emergency. All South Carolina counties southwest of I-26 are currently under either a Tropical Storm Watch or Warning. Residents are urged to prepare for effects from the storm, including power outages.

Assessors and chaplains should plan now to deploy. You will be needed immediately after the storm passes. Email the state DR office now of your availability. As soon as we know, we will provide details on where you will go.

Unit Leaders of DR Recovery units (chainsaw and mud-out) should contact your team members about deploying. Email the state DR office ASAP about your availability. It is highly likely that chainsaw units will be needed immediately, so please do not wait until after the storm to start putting a team together!

Volunteers who are trained in chainsaw, mud-out, feeding, or shower/laundry should let your Unit Leaders(s) know of your availability. Those not attached to a unit can email the state office with your name, training, and available dates to serve.

After the storm, Unit Leaders – If there is damage in your area, begin helping people in need as soon as your team is able and it is safe to move about. Notify the state DR office about your activities and the conditions in your area. If additional assistance is needed, units from outside of your area will be sent to help.

As always, “Pray without ceasing,” (1 Thess. 5:17) for those in the path of the hurricane, for first responders, for authorities making decisions, and for Southern Baptist Disaster Relief leaders and volunteers who will share God’s love as they help people in need.
